This is the perfect getaway for all your needs. Me and my partner have just come back from a 4 night stay at the tawny cabin in owl valley. We did not want for anything. The owners went above and beyond to cater for our every needs. Such a lovely friendly family always full of smiles and honestly couldn’t do enough for us. It’s a shame I can only give 5 stars as this deserves more. Thank you again owl valley crew and can’t wait for our next retreat.
This was the perfect little getaway to escape modern life! Barn Owl cabin was perfect for our little family of 4 and we loved being inside on the rainy day with the log burner going. Chris was super helpful and friendly and the hot tub was ready on our arrival which the kids loved. Lots of nature, a huge variety of birds and even a deer! We will definitely be back soon.
Had a perfect weekend break wth my fiancee and kids for my birthday. Peaceful, relaxing and picturesque location in a lovely and cozy cabin. A wonderful back to nature and off the grid glamping location that comes highly recommended, we will definitely visit again!
Beautiful setting, all facilities nicely done, accommodating hosts, beautiful setting, comfortable camping. Little touches made a big difference and Chris encouraged us to make use of these, eg plenty of candles to use, extra firefighters and kindling (small fee), solar powered fairy lights, hot water bottles (especially welcome in October!), pens, paper and cards / board games, cool box, wind up torches.
Kids loved the games shack with pool and darts, we used the communal cooking facilities and ate here in the evening. Toasty warm wood burner. The kitchen areas were equipped with every utensil you might need, also washing up liquid, tea towels, oven gloves. Composting loo was great and the bathroom was very clean and nicely decorated while still fitting with the rustic setting. Beds very comfy and warm (even in October!).
The site is stunning with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and surprises to come across. Our bags were taken to the tent by quad bike so we didn’t have to lug them there. All in all an amazing stay - the children (7 and 11) are already asking to go back, which we definitely will.
We stayed here for a couple of rainy days in October 2020 - and while the weather was dismal, Owl Valley was still a delight - in fact it was far less windy and rainy in the valley due to the geography of the area.
It's a family run business and Chris and Lesley are constantly improving the site - there was a new hot tub being installed while we were there and we were also told about a number of future additions that sound great too.
The Barn Owl cabin is completely off grid (as are the tents), so you have to heat it with a stove when it's colder but we found that after burning a couple of logs it stayed warm and cosy throughout the night - the glow of the fire is lovely too.
Looking forward to going back next spring/summer...I can imagine the valley will be absolutely beautiful then
Visited with my friends for a two night birthday treat. Found the property easily with instructions. Greeted by Chris and his daughter when we arrived and his daughter took our luggage to the bell tent via a quad bike as there is a little walk from where you park the car.
I would recommend taking wellies as the path through the woodlands to the tents can be muddy and also torches as the path is not lit and up. Each tent has its own kitchen area with two hobs and everything you could of needed and even a cool box with cool packs in it.
There is also a fire pit which was lovely in the evenings as it is very dark due to no lights. Each tent also has its own bbq and hut with a compost toilet, bowl and portable shower.Loved the fact they have hot water bottles you could use.
Steve's shack was also great for getting together to play a game of pool or darts there is also a log fire in there and plenty of candles you can light and fairy lights on the ceiling. Next to the shack is a sink for washing up and extra utensils along with a BBQ and pizza. Lidl, Aldi and Asda are within a 5 minute drive. This was like a wild glamping experience and we loved it. Cannot hear anything around just nature.
Chris was very accommodating and couldn't do enough. Would definitely return.
We had a wonderful stay at this fantastic campsite. It was a lovely break from the ‘real world’. Chris was a fantastic and helpful host. Each tent is well equipped with absolutely everything you need to cook any type of meal! The toilets were also very clean and everything was decorated so nicely including the tent itself! Will definitely be coming back. Thanks for an amazing stay!
Absolutely perfect escape! Fully equipped so you can pack lightly and just relax as soon as you arrive. Very comfy beds, love the games shack and perfect location to explore North Devon. Wonderful owners, will be back and can't wait!! Little paradise this is, for families and couples!
Fantastic experience. Brilliant facilities and a friendly host. Chris has thought of everything to make this a comfortable stay. Well situated with beach fronts and shops nearby. Lovely secluded location.
Lovely little quiet spot in the Valleys, loads of nature, a real nice getaway spot!
>We had a wonderful break away here. Our hosts Chris and Lesley were brilliant, and made us feel very welcome. Beautiful bell tents, with everything you could need, in a peaceful setting. Trees, water, nature... I even saw an owl one morning! Magic. We will be back! Thank you
We loved our visit . Thanks for the peace of owl valley Camping. Hope to see you again.
Fantastic experience. Brilliant facilities and a a friendly host. Chris has thought of everything to make this a comfortable stay. Well situated with beach fronts and shops nearby. Lovely secluded location.
We had a wonderful time at Owl Valley. Chris & Lesley were so helpful on arrival & ensured we had everything we needed. They have certainly thought of everything. There’s even a games hut with pool, darts & other games. The beds were so comfortable & a super array of cooking utensils & equipment. We will not hesitate to go back.
Quite easily the best holiday we’ve had in the UK. Peaceful, well presented, amazingly close to nature with beautiful views of the stars at night away from city lights. This was our first attempt at camping and we loved it. Chris and Lesley were fabulous with every little detail considered and we will definitely be back.
Owl Valley is a wonderful place to stay whether you want to go out and about or just simply to get away from it all by relaxing in the valley. The facilities are really well thought about and all the beds are so comfy. All the little touches make it an extra special place to stay. And the hosts couldn’t have been more welcoming. We highly recommend Owl Valley and have already booked to go back.
Had the most amazing couple of nights away at Owl Valley. Absolutely stunning. Perfect if you just want to get away from it all. Chris and Lesley are lovely hosts. The attention to detail is second to none. Would thoroughly recommend.
I could not recommend this place highly enough. We had wonderful night stay, it was literally a slice of heaven. I would have lived there forever if I had the choice. It was so luxurious, whilst still keeping that glamping feeling. The owners had thought of everything, and were also incredibly friendly. We will 100% be returning as soon as we can. The hot tub and cabin were so clean and tastefully decorated. Everything you would possibly need was there. Thank you.
This is without a doubt the most unique place I have ever stayed having travelled the world and the first time I have ever given some where 5 stars. The family that run the site are beautiful they could not do more for you and are there at every moment to make your stay as magical as possible. If you want to get away from the hustle and bussle and humbrum of modern life and leave it all behind you will not find anywhere better yet its only 5 minutes from any amenities you might need. We loved this place so much we got home and booked 2 more long weekends and the whole site out for my 40th birthday.
Absolutely Perfect, would 100% book again
Chris and family were fantastic from initial emails till the very end of our stay. The whole family made our stay really comfortable and welcome, the little things like a full and well equipped kitchen. Fresh linen on arrival and bringing our luggage from the car park. (overpacked through absolute excitement) The hot tub being pre heated when we came back from our day trips, a lovely touch. Steve’s shack that kept our older kids entertained. It’s a brilliant and magical getaway in the forest. We can’t wait to go back.
Wow what a secret hideaway!! We had the most wonderful few days here! Could have lockdown for life! The small touches in and outside the cabin were appreciated! They’ve thought of everything (even a loo seat that doesn't get cold). Hot shower and wood fire tub that was easy to use and heats up perfectly. All you could need in outdoor kitchen - utensils, pots pans etc, double gas burner, BBQ with coals. Fabulous location, stream literally a stones throw away from the cabin, you can hear the running water, sitting in the hot tub with the stars shinning down it was bliss. Chris was the most caring and hospitable host. We can’t wait to come back!!
Comfortable camping, lovely hosts
We stayed in one of the bell tents in October half term with our 2 kids (7 and 11 y.o) Fantastic set up, all the best bits of camping with no stress. Very comfortable beds and even though it was cold and wet we were lovely and warm. Really genuine and helpful host. A brilliant time, we will definitely be back.
The cabin has all he charm and atmosphere of temporarily living off-grid, but with the convenience of its own facilities and proximity to civilization.
The hosts were friendly and massively helpful by transporting all our gear via quad bike and trailer, which saved some sweat from the car park.
The property itself had basically everything you need. And, to be honest, was one of the more well-equipped/maintained "Glamping" sites I've been to.
The indoor stove worked well and kept the cabin toasty, and the bed was decent. In addition, having running water in the kitchenette area was very convenient.
We experienced the place in all weather types and temperatures over a few days and found that, combined with the communal areas of the Site, there was plenty to see and do in and around the forest/campsite - Although we ventured out each day.
Wildlife was sporadic, but that's wildlife. We heard a LOT of owls, but they were visually elusive, but saw many small birds, insects and mammals.
The area was generally peaceful and it was nice to switch off from the bustle of towns and cities.
For those interested (as I know it would have helped us), I'll break down some pros and cons and points of note, although these are all subjective to what people consider a pro or a con. After all, bear in mind, this is a place to escape...
Water. There is on-tap, cold water.
- Heat. The log-burner int he Cabin works very well. T-Shirt conditions in half an hour. There are also communal fire-pits, which we tried on one night, if you want something bigger and outside than the on-deck chimnea can offer.
- Toilet. Its a compost "long drop" toilet, but probably one of the best I've used. Decent seat, no spiders, and practically attached to the main cabin.
- Lighting. Its all either solar or battery powered, and does a pretty good job. We brought along a few extras lanterns and head torches for good measure.
- Phone signal. Practically non-existent on-site. Although, I was able to occasionally hit a small pocket of signal near one of the bell tents and sometimes near the end of the steps of the cabin. Its quite unreliable, but a minute drive up the road and you've got it again.
- Parking. Whilst not on site, its not far. You can walk there in a few minutes, but its nice not to have cars driving around.
- Showers. This is probably the biggest consideration if you are staying for any length of time. But, I can telly you its actually not THAT bad. But, basically, the shower situation involves you boiling a kettle and using that water mixed with a bit of cold into a hand-held, portable, pump system in the bathroom area. It doesn't take that long to get set up (about 2 kettles worth) and does do the job. Just don't expect a power shower and go easy on the shampoo quantity 😉
- For extra comfort, shower at night and return to the warm cabin. Bliss. (note from owner: We have now installed a gas powered hot water shower at the cabin)
- Space. Plenty of space in the cabin, and since it was just the two of us, we could use the mezzanine sleeping area to store some spare gear, freeing up floor space.
- Light. Solar/battery - So light levels are nearer atmospheric than clinical, and , as an aside, the windows have no blinds/curtains, something I solved by hanging up spare sheet or t-Shirt i had. (Note from owner: We have now installed blinds at the cabin.)
- Key. Yes, the cabin has a lockable front door.
-Steve's Shack - A fun little extra place to relax if you fancy a change of scene. Some games to play and glittering with a dozen candles...
SUMMARY
A charming place that I'm missing already. If you're concerned about facilities and keeping warm, don't be. Its all doable and a step from the mundane into the magic
We stayed in one of the bell tents in October half term with our 2 kids (7 and 11 y.o) Fantastic set up, all the best bits of camping with no stress. We got home from Owl Valley last night, and we are all eager to get back there ASAP, I’m not sure I can put into words just how perfect it was there! The family who run the site are always on hand to help if needed, including delivering your bags to your tent via quad bike and trailer making getting in and out of the valley so much easier and cleaner! The site is beautifully laid out and well maintained, whilst at the same time keeping its environmental impact and nature reserve roots at the front of its mind. There are trees for miles and the stream which runs through the site sounds so beautiful when you sit outside (especially when paired with a cracking fire and the owls hooting of an evening!).
We enjoyed a few good stomps in the stream to throw stones, jump & splash and challenge our little explorers, but if you prefer to stay a little drier there is also loads of land to explore and plenty of places to visit off site (we visited Westward Ho!, Docton Mill and Bideford) too - it’s the perfect tonic to city life!
We brought out 5 and 2 year old and stayed in the cabin which as the perfect mix of comfort, tranquility and luxury eco camping. The composting toilets and showering facilities were better than other similar sites we have used before, and we all enjoyed the simple approach whilst there, particularly our toddler! The kitchen was brilliantly equipped and there’s Steve’s Shack with a communal kitchen if you need more space/equipment too.
What an amazing place to stay - we absolutely loved our time at Owl Valley and can't wait to return. Chris and Lesley are the best hosts - made my partner's birthday such a special occasion. Thank you x
Very welcoming and friendly service
Owl Valley is the most wonderful retreat from this crazy world. Beautiful surroundings with nature all around, luxurious tents with the most comfy beds. Very well kitted out. The kids were happy exploring, butterfly hunting & paddling in the stream, the grown ups loved the peace & the wine! Marshmallows by the fire, star gazing, what's not to love! We will be back!
